A Research Laboratory addressing the City and Transportation
Created en 2003, the laboratory “Ville, Mobilité, Transport » (LVMT, or “City, Mobility, Transport”) is the product of a partnership between an engineering school - ENPC- Ecole des Ponts, a research institute -IFSTTAR - Institute on Technology, Transport and development, and a university - UPEM- the Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée.
At the intersection of academic and applied research, the laboratory addresses the interactions between city and transportation. The city is dealt with in its largest sense (metropolitan areas, networks of cities…) as is transport: not only commuting movements but also those of the non-constrained type (e.g. leisure and tourism) are considered, as is freight movement within the city.
There are 4 Research Axis dealt with at LVMT, each lab researcher participating to at least 2 of them :
Axis 1 : Urban mobilities, access and imaginaries
Axis 2: Territorial dynamics, location strategies, public policies
Axis 3 : City-transport interactions: urbanism, Transit Oriented Development, integrated modelling
Axis 4 : Physics of traffic and transport economics
LVMT is a multidisciplinary laboratory. LVMT research staff represents the fields of economics, sociology, applied mathematics, geography, urban planning, and political science, among others.
LVMT research programmes fit into the "Urban Future" Inter Lab partnership (LABEX Futurs Urbains) at Université Paris-Est. The Grand Paris urban design project is one of the projects LVMT is working on as expert or as system analysis specialist. LVMT is very active in "Living labs" projects.
Many Ph-D candidates are hosted by LVMT. They are part of the Doctoral Programme “City, Transport, Territory (VTT)”. Ph-D application are processed by VTT doctoral programme (application in may and august each year)
The LVMT is deeply involved in Master programmes with about 3500 teaching hours mostly at Université Paris-Est, Ecole des Ponts ParisTech and UPEM but also at University of Lille 1.
The LVMT is part of competitiveness cluster on “sustainable City and Mobility” and works to develop partnerships with transport and service enterprises, public institutions, and local authorities.
LVMT is the scientific director of 4 Chairs and major partnership :
- Chair Socio economy and public transport modelling - partner STIF
- Chair Eco design of transport infrastructures and urban systems - partner Vinci
- Chair Gare - Parter Gares et Connexions
- Chair New economical approaches of mobility systems - Partner SNCF
